HiHi

Amazing & impresive! nearly all your thoughts have a "nearly" bit wanna clue?

The Vigin and Cayman Islands are both popular Holiday spots, keep the cryptic Cook clue in mind and try along that path it will provide a link.

Oh! and it's all true, my parents were not married :)

Hawaii
HiHi

Thats the place! (James Cook died there), still has the Union flag in it's flags top left quadrant; and for some strange reason the USA did seem somewhat keen to not be a part of the British Commonwealth :conf:, but whats the catering bit, that will leed to, "who am I", see original ? :)

HiHi

This seems to have stalled a bit so here's another clue.

The "Who am I" was a famous 'Gamer' so dedicated in fact that his catering invention was a direct product of his addiction.

Uuh, I´m getting desperate though I hope I´m on right track now: Cook named his discovery, later Hawaii, the Sandwich Islands in honor of one of his sponsors, John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich

So is mr. Montagu The Man who you are?
HiHi

Brilliant!

The Earl of Sandwich is reputed to have invented the Sandwich coz he didn't want to leave the gaming tables at his club for lunch and ordered the staff to stick some Beef between two bits of bread (hence the muti £million pound catering industry).

Hawaii, was named after an Earl of Sandwich (hence the bit about the state flag, which has the union flag top left corner; which due to an unfortunate disagreement between it's new owners and the British govt. (allegedly over Tea) is not a member of the British Commonwealth and therefore lost out on the civilizing influence of cricket :-) )

So roughly the cryptic clue was James Cook may well have said "I could die for a Sandwich!" and in fact did die on one ie a Sandwich Isle, now known as Hawaii.

Want another one or has the above shattered you belief in Justice and the essential fairness of the Universe? :-)

You are the one who is brilliant Peter! A most complex and challenging question, you evidently have talent in making quizzes.

Not all people in these questions have to be men that made history by conquering large territories or being exceptionally cruel. History is full of people worth knowing, interesting stories that lay behind them. Your Sandwich-man is a prime example.

By all means we are ready for another. Give us your best shot. I try to think something of equal challenge in near future. :)

cheers
Ari
HiHi

Ok lets try this one,

I am reputed to have introduced the Styrup into Western Europe for my Cavalry which enabled me to win a decisive battle altering forever the fate of Western Europe.

I also had a Battleship named after me.
