On 27 June the 5th Gds Tank Army was released from its reserve role to punch through the German defenses along the Berezina River, which had been strengthened with the arrival of the 5th Panzer Division, and achieve a decisive breakthrough to Minsk. Spearheading the attack of the 29th Tank Corps northwest of Borisov, the T-34/85s of the 31st Tank Brigade attempted to force a crossing of the upper Berezina near Studenka against the 5th Recon Battalion reinforced with a mixed battalion of army anti-tank guns and tank-destroyers. The Russian tankers quickly discovered that along with the honor of leading the attack, the point of the spear is always chipped and dented and often blunted!
