Guise, France, 27 km northeast of St. Quentin, 29th August 1914: On August 25th, Joffre issued General Instructions Number 2. In this it read: "Having been unable to carry out the offensive maneuver originally planned, future operations will be conducted in such a way as to reconstruct on our left a force capable of resuming the offensive by a combination of the IVe and Ve Armées, the BEF and new forces drawn from the east, while the other armies hold the enemy in check..." Based on these instructions, Lanrezac was ordered to turn the Ve Armée west and counterattack towards St-Quentin in order to allow time for the new VIe Armée to concentrate at Amiens. Lanrezac was furious with the order, fearing that a counterattack would dangerously expose his right flank and risk isolating his army. It was only with direct supervision by Joffre would he carry out his orders. The battle that ensued had a profound impact on the German invasion. While it did put Lanrezac's army at great risk and loss of life, it also was one of the direct causes to von Kluck's radical change in direction to the southeast, instead of towards the southwest. This maneuver completely reversed the provisions of the Schlieffen Plan, and the limited successes here by the French would greatly restore their fighting spirit. The French must attack ruthlessly and establish all bridgeheads.
KG_RangerBooBoo
Very balanced with both sides having opportunities to attack and defend
jonnymacbrown
The French player must be well versed in F14 attack tactics to make this offensive work, especially in the use of artillery which gives the French a decisive advantage

A bit in favor of the Allied side, I believe - I don't think I had a chance at a win, but the Allied player did - but could be the players too.

CP player can't win this one - not even a draw.

A short and challenging scenario that brings about what is the best in the game.

That WWI series may be the best what has happened to the TOC series if you have a penchant for WWI, of course. A nice small to medium sized scenario where the balance between the belligerents is somehow reached - a rare occurrence in WWI - so it can be either lost or won as you go against a human opponent.

Fun little scenario.

A pretty well balanced scenario. It stands out because either side can choose to go on the attack or stay back. The French start with a minor victory but it is a very thin lead.

Bit of a revolving door in play here, the French can push hard in one direction, while the Germans can push hard in the opposite direction. The French can counter the German advance, but doing so likely squanders their offensive options while due to the starting condition of the French forces will peter out without the reinforcements. So a good scenario with a guessing game in play.

The Allies have 2 advantages here, they start with a victory in hand, and the Reserve Corps. Where and how they employ the Reserve Corps can determine the outcome of the game. The Germans need to capitalize on a French error to win, and if none are forthcoming will have to shoot for a Draw.

Because it is a smaller map with limited units it cannot be higher than a 7 or so imo. That said I found this scenario to be very fun and challenging. The opponent I played is very skilled, so he took a much smaller but better trained army and fought touch and nail. This is the type of scenario where a better French player could route an inferior German one, but if you are trying to teach someone the game play as the Germans and see if you can break through the hordes of low level troops.
