Newbie RV questions
Ok, here come the questions.
I have read both SB manuals, but at times they either aren't very clear
or show units or weapons from the new games - not RV.

I am really starting to understand this game. I like how the "leader" can
rally broken units like Squad Leader

See attached image.

1) Does the number in the "cross" mean the causalities suffered?
I sometimes see them hit where a unit isn't, but I see a number showup.
I am guessing it is the effect of the radius blast.

2) Upper left corner unit. Does the "H" stand for "Heavy gun or equipment"?

3) Is there a "key" to give you an idea of the amount of damage you could
inflict on a unit before you shot? Like a percent to hit etc...?

4) How do you figure out how much travel points you could be using to
move into or thru a hex? The manual tell you to use "F2", but then do I
need to manually figure out in my head what it is going to take to get from
A to B hexes?

I am just trying to figure it out. I move an armor unit to flank a Russian attack, but I created a hill and didn't have enough points left to face them
and got smoked :conf:

This is correct. It is the number of casualties inflicted.

Quote:2) Upper left corner unit. Does the "H" stand for "Heavy gun or equipment"?

Yes.

Quote:3) Is there a "key" to give you an idea of the amount of damage you could

Short answer, not really. Using data like the PEN or Lethality values along with the defensive values, as well as distance from target, range of your weapons, etc, you can have an idea how successful a shot might be, but there are no hard-and-fast % associated with this.

There is a 'view reachable hexes' setting in the task-bar and within the drop-down menu. I use it a lot when it comes to movement. There's also one for visible hexes, spotted units and units that can be targeted. It takes a bit of time to toggle through them, but it is worth the time when planning your turn.

Yep that is the effect of the blast radius.

2) Upper left corner unit. Does the "H" stand for "Heavy gun or equipment"?

Yes, the 'H' would indicate a heavy weapon.

3) Is there a "key" to give you an idea of the amount of damage you could

Nope, no key...but you can get an idea by looking at the distance modifiers, effectiveness of the firing unit, moral modifiers, terrain modifiers, armor modifier, etc. :) (you will develop a feel for it over time...unless you want to spend most of your time working out the math). Take a look at JZ's site, there is lots of good info there: http://sites.google.com/site/jzs-place/j...lculations

Yes, you need to manually figure it out. You look at the parameter data for the scenario to see movement costs based on terrain...it is not always the same! This is not so bad though and unlike combat results it can be figured in your head easily enough. It is also one of those things you develop a feel for.

I am just trying to figure it out. I move an armor unit to flank a Russian attack, but I created a hill and didn't have enough points left to face them

You will probably get better more complete answers from our SB vets, this is just my two cents. JZ's site has a lot of good nuts and bolts under the hood info...

RE: Newbie RV questions
Thanks guys!

I have been "toggling" thru the hex icon buttons. I use the icons and "hot keys" and thought maybe I was missing something :P
I seem to be doing LOTS of toggling. View, weapon loads etc.....

Guess I am going to have to pay more attention to the valves before I fire off a shot! :jester2:

I am at this stage in my SB learning curve:
I target the units to pin them down for starters, while going after their leaders. My reasoning to pinning them down is they can't advance towards
me in their "pinned" state. Course I blowup their armor units Big Grin

JZ's is a good site, (http://sites.google.com/site/jzs-place/j...-home-page)

I'd also take a look here for some basic grunt information...

I'd still do the View Reachable Hexes rather than trying to figure it out in my head....

RE: Newbie RV questions
Another suggestion that may be helpful in your learning curve is to hold off on using your 3rd party art mods, for now, and just limit the use for the mods for only the map.

As you have more than likely already noticed, the symbols and icons that you are currently using, will not show up in the game manuals. If you play a few games using the stock icons, it would help you in understanding the manual better, when you need to look something up.

I agree. I have 3 versions of RV installed. I play the "stock" version, then
try the one with the mods installed. I like how the mod shows the units on the "ground" vs the stock version.

My biggest issue is that I am behind the times with SB. I had/ have the same issue with Panzer Commander. I was a CMBB fanboy and tried to come into Panzer Commander on it's reinvention. I am lost with how
the game engine controls the phases and unit commands. :conf:
