RE: For VM and discussion Panther D K43 Alt scn - ideas
Further thought: I will look at the Panthers in K43 and their speed. But I am totally against tailoring a units ratings to accomplish something specifc because that goes against the very reason I created the Alt OOB in the first place.

I think this is another case of how we naturally want to make the Germans stronger. Sure some of us don't like the fact that a German unit could be rated "D" quality, but the Panther brigade did not contribute too much to the overall outcome of the battle but with a "C" rated Panther brigade in the game they can practically lead the advance to Kursk by themselves. I am exaggerating but the reason they were lowered to "D" was to make them slower, cause more breakdowns, and generally make them less effective overall which makes sense to me given how new the vehicle was and how inexperienced the crews were that were fielding them (not general experience but experience with the vehicle). In this case the "D" rating causes this unit to perform more historically, regardless of what we think it should be.

i'm with Volcano here. if the ALT scenarios are to be
a way of providing a more 'historic' feel of the battle,
we should take military history sources in account.
even if that means dumping some prejudices about
the sophisticated 'Wunderwaffen' of the nazis.

german sources clearly state how well the Panthers
could fight but on the other hand how very bad their
reliability at Kursk actually was. the combat weight of
the Panzer V actually was far higher than anticipated
and thus put a very high strain on the suspension and
the gear box - without sufficent spare parts at hand.
so, giving them low morale levels is a quite adequate way
of taking the edge out of the Panthers.
