[Near Rowno, Russia] [H2H] [HISB] [BZ] Under the terms of the Chantilly Agreement of December 1915, Russia, France, Britain and Italy committed to simultaneous attacks against the Central Powers in the summer of 1916. Russia felt obliged to lend troops to fight in France and Salonika and to attack on the Eastern Front, in the hope of obtaining munitions from Britain and France. The Russians also initiated the disastrous Lake Naroch Offensive in the Vilno area, during which the Germans suffered only one-fifth as many casualties as the Russians. This offensive took place at the French request, in the hope that the Germans would transfer more units to the East after their attack on Verdun. General Aleksei Brusilov commander of the Southwest Front presented his plan to the Stavka, the Russian high command, proposing a massive offensive against the Austro-Hungarian forces in Galicia. Brusilov's plan aimed to take some of the pressure off French and British armies in France and the Italian Army along the Isonzo Front and, if possible, to knock Austria-Hungary out of the war. As the Austrian army was heavily engaged in Italy, the Russian army enjoyed a significant numerical advantage on the Galician front. The offensive began in June and lasted through September 1916. The actual northern part of the offensive involved many divisions and brigades along a front line which stretched some 60 miles. The Russian 8th Army under General Kaledin fielding some 11 Infantry Divisions and 4 Cavalry Divisions on June 4th slammed into the Austro-Hungarian 4th Army under Archduke Josef Ferdinand with 10 & 1/2 Infantry Divisions and 1 Cavalry Division. This scenario is intended to depict the first few days of the offensive rolled into one and scaled way back. In reality the city of Lutsk some 15 miles to the west of the front line was captured 5 days later on June 10th. To give an idea of the overall scale, the famed city of Brest Litovsk highlighted in early WWII battles lies 120 miles to the northwest beyond Kowel. [ALL: No VV] [NONE] [1.1 Alpha]
