9 March, 1919
Kherson, on the Dnieper river Ukraine, 15 miles from the Black
Sea. (Best played against a human opponent, or as Bolshevik against
the Allied AI), In an attempt to support anti Bolshevik elements
in the Ukraine, French and Greek forces had landed at Odessa
from December 1918, and began tentative operations into the Ukrainian
interior. To ensure food supplies, safeguard arms stores and
cover the withdrawal of German troops, on 29th February French
and Greek troops moved up to the city of Kherson by rail and
occupied it. On 2nd March Ukrainian Bolshevik forces under Ataman
Grigoriev commenced attacking Kherson. By the 8th March, the
situation was getting very serious for the Allies, and they started
to be pushed back . A Rifle and MG company of the French 176th
Infantry Regiment landed at the docks, but refused to advance
to support their colleagues. Armed Bolshehik workers were taking
to the streets in parts of the city. More reinforcements are
expected on the 9th carried on a naval task force led by the
famous old ex Imperial Russian Battleship Potemkin, but can they
hold out till then? Should they continue to hold the perimeter,
or fall back to the old Turkish Citadel by the river?

Allies are hard-pressed to prevent the masses invading Kherson from three sides. Once the Centrals make it into the city there's not much to stop them before they reach the river, where the allies counter. By then, time is of the essence.
Resolve then, that on this very ground, with small flags waving and tinny blasts on tiny trumpets, we shall meet the enemy, and not only may he be ours, he may be us. --Walt Kelly
