May 4-5, 1943: Convoy ONS-5 had already successfully beaten off one attack (see "Night Battle with Gruppe Star" for that battle.) By May 4, the Germans had merged submarines from two different groups to form Gruppe Fink. After days of fighting difficult weather, there were a several stragglers from the group, and the escort commander had been forced to return to base because he was unable to refuel at sea. On the night of May 4-5, the Germans would strike with one of the largest wolfpacks of the war.
