Scenario Briefing: Crossing the Düna (or Daugava or Battle of Spilves) (Historical)

Charles XII of Sweden had delivered two crushing defeats on his enemies. In July 1700, he had forced Frederick IV of Denmark out of the war and decisively defeated the Russians at Narva. Charles then turned his attention to his last opponent-August the Strong. The combined Saxon-Russian army had entrenched themselves across the 600 meter wide Düna River under the command of Adam Heinrich von Steinau.

Charles planned an assault across the river. The Swedes had collected hundreds of boats for the assaulting troops and constructed a floating pontoon to move reserves across the river. Floating batteries, batteries in Riga and a Swedish frigate were to provide supporting fire. Prior to the attack, the Swedes employed a deception plan by constantly moving troops to mask the true crossing point and disperse the Saxon-Russian forces.

In this historical scenario, the Saxon-Russian army has been spread troops to cover all the main crossing points. The bulk of the Saxon forces are at the actual crossing point with some Russian support. Still unsure of the actual location, Steinau has gone on patrol and left Patkull in command. The Swedes launch the first wave of the attack very early in the morning under cover of smoke. Unfortunately a strong wind started to blow, making it difficult to deploy the pontoon with the reserves.
