(Historical 20 minute turns) After Valverde, Sibley's Confederate army occupied Santa Fe. With Canby holed up in Fort Craig, on Sibley's line of supply back to Texas, the Union had to scrounge up a new army to confront the men in gray. The bulk of the troops would be a regiment from Colorado that force-marched from Denver to Fort Union, the last stronghold in New Mexico. On March 22, 1862, Sibley stayed in Santa Fe in administrative mode and sent LtC William Scurry toward Fort Union. Union cavalry and infantry under Colorado's Colonel Slough was ready to meet them halfway--at Glorieta. Reference: "The Battle of Glorieta" by Don E Alberts

The Union forces can get to Glorieta too fast, the battle does not play out historically.
No retreat no surrender
