3 August 1808 - Historical - Intended for Head to Head play (no AI scripts) - The Swedish naval forces were unable to destroy the Russian coastal ships near Turko so they proposed to attack the reinforcements instead. The Russians, unable to deal with the Swedish open water naval forces, were limited to using the inter-coastal waterways. The initial attack occurred near Tallholmen Island where the Russians were held in check by the 8 gunboats under Captain Sölfverarm. The Captain had his forces fall back, and reinforced with more gunboats and yawls, then had a battery built on Rövarholmen Island. The Russians built a battery on the shore south of the island and with a much larger force attempted moved to try and break the line to the west. A long protracted action ensued with neither side sinking any ships but eventually the Swedes were forced to give way. However, the Russians did not exploit their success initially. The Swedes, on the other hand, were reinforced, but were timid and did not attack the Russian forces. Instead they withdrew and the Russians were able to gain access to the waterway system and reinforce their forces near Turko. SPECIAL RULE: Any ship which accrues 300 fatigue points must withdraw from the action. The Swedes will fall back to the north map edge while the Russians will fall back to the east mapedge. Ships destroyed are actually considered captured or rendered ineffective for immediate future actions. As with most naval actions few if any ships were actually sunk. HISTORICAL NOTES: 1. The deployment of the forces is based on a map I obtained on the action and probably is not completely accurate. 2. Composition and placement of the land batteries are supposition. Any information that can be provided to us which will provide for better accuracy would be appreciated. PLAY BALANCE NOTE: The Russians had 60 ships. In order to balance the situation the Gun Yawls were combined into two-ship units but only have one gun.
