2 September 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - Following the action at Ruona, the Swedes felt that their flanks had been compromised based on reports of Russians operating to the north and south of their position, so despite a heavy rain they retreated six kilometers to Salmi. Reports that the Russians were retreating from Ruoni (in fact it was only their baggage train) caused Adlercreutz to want to retrace his steps. Both parties ran into each other in the woods in between the two towns which caused the Swedes to fall back after some hasty skirmishing. The Russian forces arrived before Salmi and their commander, Kulnev, detected a weakness to the Swedish left flank. He ordered Khudinsky to attack that flank with his Jägers and several line companies. In the center and left he placed more of his line and Jäger units while at the same time keeping a reserve to exploit a breakthrough. The battle began with heavy musket fire. The Swedish held the artillery advantage. The first attacks by Khudinsky failed and the Swedes counter attacked. In turn the Russians reinforced their right flank and the Swedes were pressed back to the Jhylä inn. However, Adlercreutz committed portions of his reserve which caused the Russians to retreat. Unfortunately before the Swedes could take advantage of their gains Adlercreutz was informed that his rear could be compromised by a Russian force that had taken Kauhajoki. The Swedes were forced to retreat once again. Note: this scenario only covers the middle portion of the battle when the Russians launched their main assault.
