25 June 1808 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head or Solo as the French player vs. the AI - NOTE - Scenario uses special rules to determine victory for both HTH and Solo versions. See "RSW_6-Vasa.pdf" for details - The King of Sweden ordered that a force be sent to conduct a raid near the city of Vasa. The force was to take the town and conduct operations against the Russian rear area. Unfortunately, the orders were too ambiguous for them to be carried out. After a substantial delay in getting ships and provisions along with poor weather which delayed the force from sailing, the force finally set out on the 23rd of June. They landed at Österhankmo, a small fishing village on the coast, northwest of Vasa. Colonel Bergenstråle took the orders to the letter and once his force had neared Vasa he decided, against better military judgement, to attack the town as directed. Local Finnish townsmen had told him that there was only a small garrison in Vasa. The other Swedish commanders had informed him that there would be three thousand reinforcements coming up from the south. However, instead of the small numbers of Russians rumoured to be in the area there was actually over one thouasand men avialable to Demidov, the Russian comander, a force larger than Bergenstråle's small contingent. Add to this that no reinforcements would be forthcoming. The Swedish force arrived to the east of the town, topped out on a ridge, and saw that there were Russian forces arriving from the south. Both sides raced for the town and a fierce struggle ensued. Another force of Russians arrived from the north later on and were able to surround Bergenstråle's force. The Colonel and half of his men were captured. The rest returned to the ships and sailed up the coast to unite with Klinspor's forces at Nykarleby. A gallant gesture but one that had failed miserably. Notes: The Russians are fixed until 1405 - Turn 2. This reflects their being unprepared for the attack.
