11 November 1805 - Historical - Mortier had been placed in charge of a Provisional Corps which composed 3 divisions from various corps in the army. He task was to follow along after Kutusov along the north bank of the Danube. The roads were narrow and winding and the weather cold and foggy. Sometime on the afternoon of the 10th his outposts pushed through Durenstein, west of Krems, and encountered Russian scouts. Gazan's division settled itself in for the night while the Russians became aware from prisoners taken that there were only a few thousand French troops nearby. On the 11th, Kutusov formed up his army into six columns. The Reserve was composed of tired forces and the artillery reserve which had suffered greatly due to lack of good transport, but the rest of his army was ready for a fight. Sending two columns on a wide flanking maneuver around Gazan's flank, Kutusov had Miloradovich and his I Column advance down the road from Krems to press Gazan to fix him in place. The plan was to trap him against the river. Only the fine command presence of the French saved them from disastor. Dupont arrived late in the afternoon to save the day. Can you as the Russian commander do better than Kutosov. Or will you command the French and repeat their heroic performance? Intended to be played Head to Head. Note: the Allied 4th and 5th Columns do not release. Historically they were kept in reserve or were formations that were worn out from the rearguard actions of the past few days. There are variants that offer release times for them.
