28 June 1815 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - The last battle of the Napoleonic Wars was not the Battle of Waterloo but was a minor action played out by General Rapp who had been given command of the V Corps, also known as the Army du Rhin. Stationed in his native Alsace-Lorraine to monitor the Allies he was ordered to march to Paris to help form a new French army. Learning of the loss at Waterloo he endeavored instead to delay the Allies as long as possible by holding Strasbourg and opearating against them to the best of his ability. He would be involved in the last battle of the Napoleonic Wars. The Battle: La Souffel is a river that runs west to east into the Rhine northeast of Strausbourg. Rapp placed his men north of Strasbourg along La Souffel at key bridge crossing points. As the Allies advanced on his positions they found the crossing points contested. Heated battles begun for these locations. Despite being outnumbered, the vaunted 10th Legere, nonetheless, held its own. Rapp fed reinforcements in as best he could. At one point the Allies were able to penetrate between the 15th and 16th Divisions. Rapp led a daring attack that shattered the Austrian attack. According to his own memoirs they captured the baggage of Eugene, the Prince of Wurttemberg! The Allies would have suffered more losses had not the Russians arrived on the scene. Rapp was unable to recapture some of his artillery and with the battlefield in darkness he felt that it was prudent to call of any further attack. His forces fell back into the city and held out until an honorable surrender could be negotiated. NOTE: Schwarzenberg continued his commitment of non-Austrian units in battle thus his division was held back and the Wurttemberg and Hesse-Darmstadt formations were "blooded" instead. To reflect this the Austrian division is fixed as the battle begins but then by 6 PM will release and join the action.
