13 March 1814 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - Reims, the ancient city where the kings of France were coronated, was the connecting point for the two main Allied armies. The city had changed hands several times during the campaign and had recently fallen to St. Priest's 8th Corps. Following the battle of Laon, Napoleon's HQ was in Soissons. Upon hearing of the fall of the city he dispatched his forces to retake it. With approximately 20,000 men and a large force of artillery he found the Allies unprepared near the city. St. Priest hastily organized a defense on the left bank of the river. This would prove to be a mistake as Napoleon's force outclassed his in every department. The Allied left consisted of a Prussian brigade from Kleist's corps and it folded like an accordian to the pressure of Defrance's division of cavalry. Bourdesoulle followed up the attack and both French cavalry forces turned the southern flank of the Allied line. Napoleon formed a strong battery to face the Allies while sending Friant to cross the river to surround the city. St. Priest was felled by a cannon ball fired by the same gunner who had shot down General Moreau at Dresden. The subsequent French assault by the Gardes d'Honneur was impetuous and hit upon the Russian dragoons sending them flying back to the bridge which was crowded with panicked refuges. Their rash attack, however, was without infantry support and they found themselves surrounded on two sides by Russian infantry. One in three troopers fell that day and the division never recovered from the attack. The Allies fell back into the city and on the next day it would fall to the attack of the French army. This was one of the last victories for Napoleon. He had again demonstrated his ability to act in a lightning fashion and decimate a section of the Allied army.

I played too cautiously as the French, resulting in a draw. French must be aggressive to win this.
