17-18 February 1814 - Historical - Intended to be played Head to Head - This is the two day version of the historical running engagement that started with Napoleon's attack from the north against the Hauptarmee which culminated in the action at Montereau. Initially the French got a good jump on the Allies and Wittgenstein's corps was caught unprepared and suffered severe losses. They followed this up by running to ground Wrede's advance guard. A pursuit to the south followed and by nightfall the weary Frenchmen were falling out of the ranks after almost 12-14 hours of combat. The next day Napoleon ordered three columns to advance on Montereau to trap as much of the Hauptarmee as possible. The Kronprinz of Wurttemberg was ordered to hold the bridgehead north of Montereau with his IV Corps so that the rest of the Hauptarmee could cross over the bridges and retreat to the southeast. His command held its ground during the morning but by the afternoon his corps was fighting for its life. Despite heavy losses he was able to hold the crucial bridgehead long enough for the army to escape. Notes: Victor's II Corps will FIX earlier than the rest of the French army as their commander was hesitant to commit them (he let the Paris Reserve and MacDonald do most of the fighting). Both sides will FIX at 9 PM and will release to resume movement at 6 AM the following morning. Napoleon is fixed to begin the game as he was not at the front as much in this battle has he had been at others. He releases at 9 AM (along with his escort). The bridges at Montereau have been strengthened so that the Allied player cannot destroy them. The bridge at Bray may be destroyed (as it was historically). The French have a small number of pioneers which can repair the bridge if needed (they did not have a bridging train at the battle). They have HAS BOATS capability.
