Panzer Leader - The Matrix Games version of West Front

General Guderian, in recognition of his successes with the XIX Panzer Corps, was promoted to command his own Panzergruppe with the XXXIX and XLI Panzer Corps positioned on both sides of Rethel. Desperate as their situation was, the French defenders began to fight back with a determination and spirit that had not been seen along the Meuse and seldom in the panzers' drive to the Channel. French troops stood their ground against German attacks and resisted to the last man in village after village. On the 10th, following assaults by the 17th Infantry to secure a bridgehead across the Asine River, the 1st Panzer Division began its push southward. At Juniville, the riflemen of Colonel Balck's 1st Schutzen Regiment were faced with clearing one of the well-prepared defensive positions. While advancing south of the flooded Retourne River to support the attack, tanks of the 1st Panzer Regiment accompanied by Guderian, named "Panzer Leader" by his men and the German press, engaged elements of Guderian's old adversary - the battered French 3rd Armored Division.
