[Blitzkrieg Expansion Pack] For Rommel's last attack on the El Alamein position, it was imperative that any threat to his right flank be averted. Using his now efficient 'left hook' attack, he planned to let his mobile forces slip through the British defenses in the South, than swing back north and attack Alam Halfa ridge. This left his right flank vulnerable to attack. For this, the recon battalions of 15th and 21st Panzer Divisions were grouped together in Kampfgruppe Kiel. Oberstleutnant Kiel had orders to cover his southern flank. The New 8th Army commander [Lt. Gen Montgomery] was expecting Rommel's left hook and positioned the 7. Armoured Division to attack the flank of the penetration, for this the bulk of the division was deployed to the southeast of the main defensive line. The foward detachment of the division met Kiel's forces in the late evening of August 31. Kiel went looking for trouble...and he found some!
