Galloping Horse Hill Mass, 13km SWW of Lunga Point, Guadalcanal: [Best played as Allied] One of the final battles for Guadalcanal would take place on a group of connected hills southwest of Henderson Field know as The Galloping Horse because of the shape they formed on aerial maps of the area. One of the most important lessons learned by US soldiers and marines fighting in the dense jungles of "The Canal," was not to count the Japanese soldier out or underestimate his fighting ability and determination. This lesson was reinforced for the men of the 27th Infantry Regiment during the fight to seize the Galloping Horse from the remnants of the Japanese 228th and 230th Infantry Regiments in early January 1943. Colonel McCulloch's orders were easy to understand, but would be tougher to accomplish. Supported by the 8th and 90th Field Artillery Battalions and a platoon of marine tanks, clear all enemy opposition from the area and capture the high ground between the northwest and southwest forks of the Matanikau. Finally, as usual in the Pacific, it would be up to the infantry battalions to get the job done and pay the price for another piece of jungle real estate. Design Note: Map scale has been adjusted for clarity and playability.
