Namur Island, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands: [Best played as Allied] While the 4th Marine Division's 23rd MRLT assaulted the northern end of Kwajalein Atoll at Roi on 1 February 1944, the 24th Marines struck its sister island, Namur. Connected to Roi by a manmade causeway and a strip of coral, Namur contained the bulk of buildings and shelters housing the Japanese 61st Guard Force garrison and other personnel supporting the magazines and airfield complex on Roi. As such, the American assault battalions were guaranteed to encounter more resistance as they came ashore on Green Beach and fought through a maze of log bunkers, trenches and concrete pillboxes. To add to the problems facing the marines was a shortage of amphibious tractors called LVTs that forced the use of lighter easily damaged LCVPs, disrupting and delaying the assault waves. The delay would prove to be an invaluable ally for the Japanese, who quickly recovered from the initial heavy shelling and poured fire into the invaders. The fighting quickly became too close to identify the front lines, leaving the 24th Marines on their own with very little artillery and no close air support to dig the defenders from their positions. This is a fine example of what happens when all of the Japanese are fixed with no release turns. This could be a challenging scenario if altered properly.
