The Battle of Torda - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Torda, 330kms east of Budapest. (Best played as Axis). This simulates the first 6 days of the battle for Torda, from the first Russian attack on 14/9/44, to the main Hungarian counterattack on 19/9/44. In the autumn of 1944, the Hungarian 2nd Army had invaded Southern Transylvania in an attempt to secure better defensive terrain in the Carpathian Mountains. By early September this attack had been stalled by Soviet reinforcements, and the newly arrived Hungarian 25th Infantry Division had been ordered to assume a defensive position along the Aranyos river, it's right flank resting on the town of Torda. The 2nd Mountain Replacement Brigade held the high ground to the west of Torda, while the 2nd Armoured Division (including recently arrived "Tigris" Heavy Tanks) and 10th Assault Gun Battalion (with Zyrinyi Assault Guns) was in reserve. The 25th Infantry had to hold a long front, and it's task was made more difficult by being considerably below full strength due to recent heavy fighting in other sectors. Before any of the Hungarian units could dig in, they were subjected to a fierce attack by the Russian 4th Guards Rifle Division.
