Gorshchina, 75km NNE of Tarnopol: [Best played as Allied] After the heavy losses suffered during the Korsun/Cherkassy Pocket debacle, Hitler still insisted on a policy of "Defend Everything" and "No Retreat" on the Russian Front. Beginning the first week in March 1944, Germany's leader would be proven wrong again, and once again the men of Army Group South would again pay a high price for his folly. In Blood! On the morning of the 4th the Soviet First Ukrainian Front, now under the direct command of Marshal Zhukov, struck from near Shepetovka against Field Marshal Manstein's left. The savage attack was combined with an advance by Konev's Second Ukrainian Front further south through Uman, intended to repeat the trap sprung at Korsun. The Soviet armored formations poured through a gap in the front, tearing the German 4th Panzer Army in two. Intending to slow the enemy's advance toward Tarnopol and buy Manstein time to rebuild his defenses, the battered 7th Panzer Division dug-in around Gorshchina. The plan worked too well! The Russians had tasted blood and were unwilling to bypass the Axis positions and leave a powerful panzer force to strike into the rear of the 4th Tank Army. Orders were given to the 10th Guards Tank Corps to turn south with two brigades and destroy the German defenders!

For a fixed, static-defense type of battle, this one rocks. The Russians can and will get slaughtered, but victory can be achieved. A nice mix of everything: tanks, infantry, rocket arty, engineers, heavy arty, all centered around a well emplaced defense.
