Hill 239 - The Matrix Games version of East Front II

Lisyanka, 160km S of Kiev: [Best played against Human opponent] Hill 239 was a commanding spot along the approaches to the trapped German forces in the Korsun Pocket, two miles northeast of Lisyanka. If it could be captured and held, the relief operation to rescue the surrounded German formations was as good as accomplished. From there to the edge of the pocket was a mere six miles, thirty minutes for a fast runner. But for more than 10,000 men trapped under the hazy winter sky at Cherkassy it was an eternity. On February 16th Armored Group Frank, spearheading the German relief forces, reinforced by Tigers and Panthers from Bake's Heavy Panzer Regiment, attacked the Soviet infantry dug-in on the hills to open an escape route for the surrounded German's trying to break out from the Korsun Pocket. But the commander of the Soviet 5th Guards Tank Corps also realized the value of Hill 239 and ordered the 21st Guards Tank Brigade to reinforce the hill and prevent a breakthrough at all costs.
