Scenario Briefing: Assembled in East Prussia, Georg von Küchler's 3rd Army was to advance on the Vistula from the north and pressure the Modlin Fortress and Warsaw. Von Küchler assigned I Corps to make the main effort. Consisting of two infantry divisions and Panzer Division Kempf, the corps was to advance south via the road junction at Mlawa. 216th Infantry Division would advance on I Corps' right while Corps Wodrig and 1st Cavalry Brigade attacked on its left.

The German attack out of East Prussia was opposed by Emil Krukowicz-Przedrzymirski's Modlin Army. With insufficient numbers to cover the entire border, Krukowciz-Przedrzymirski focused on denying the Germans access to the crossroads at Mlawa. Defended by the 20th Infantry Division and protected by marshes and a dense network of fieldworks and concrete pillboxes, the Mlawa defenses were formidable. Despite the strength of the Mlawa position, Krukowicz-Przedrzymirski was under no illusion that it could hold indefinitely: its flanks, protected by just two brigades of cavalry, could easily be turned. Modlin Army's mission, therefore, was only to delay the Germans near the border while the mobilization continued and, once it was necessary, retreat to the Vistula. The 8th Infantry Division was held in reserve to counterattack or cover the eventual retreat.

Placing his faith in Panzer Division Kempf, Von Küchler was confident that his army would smash through the Polish defenses and arrive at the Vistula by the end of the first day. This assessment would prove to be wildly optimistic. German intelligence and aerial reconnaissance had failed to identify the Mlawa fortifications and Von Küchler seriously overestimated the capabilities of his Panzer division. The Poles, though badly outnumbered and outgunned, had made the most of the terrain and were determined to resist the invader. What Von Küchler had predicted to a be a single-day dash would turn into a multi-day frustration.

Recommended Rules: (Default)
Alternative Assault Resolution, Artillery Set Up, Recon Spotting, Virtual Supply Trucks, Optional Surrender, Low Visibility Air Effects, Quality Fatigue Modifier, Counter Battery Fire, Night Fatigue, Programmed Weather.

Additionally, Delayed Disruption Reporting will provide a more challenging experience for the attacking player.

Design Note:

1. The high-value objective hexes behind the Vistula and Narew rivers are not needed for a German victory, but if captured will likely guarantee that the German player wins.

2. This scenario uses conditional reinforcements. The arrival of some Polish reinforcements are tied to control of certain objective hexes.
