El Guettar, 20Km SE of Gafsa, Mar 20th 1943: There was little confidence in the fighting ability of US II Corps in mid March. As a result, it was assigned to be a sideshow for the 8th Army, it was to conduct a flank battle to assist the main attack up the coast. The limitations on Patton were to seize the town of Gafsa, and take the key passes throught the Eastern Dorsal. However, he was to merely threaten the Axis flank, not to proceed through the Dorsal onto the Gabes plain. Thus, Patton was kept on a very short rein. He instructed his staff to plan Operation Wop, to attack the Italians and "give them some steel!" The Axis forces had pulled back to a defensive position overloooking the small date palm oasis village of El Guettar. The attack began on the night of Mar 20th. [Size, large]. Designer Note: This scenario has been optimized for HTH play.

Against competent Allied play, the Germans have little chance for a Draw, much less any level of victory. The biggest negative I see with this scenario is that the Axis reinforcements start so far east, some units start on the board edge, and it takes three quarters of the game to get these units into attack position once the fixed units are released. Essentially, when the Axis launch their counter attack, there are only a handful of turns remaining. When I conceded the game, with 7 turns remaining, I had 3 Axis artillery units and a motorized infantry unit that had still NOT reached the front lines! Not a recommended scenario.

VP levels need to be adjusted-Allies can reach Major Victory w/o having to continue to the far VP hexes, which makes it difficult for Axis to counter-attack in the scenario time-frame.

The Allies just swarm the defending Italians.
The Italians cannot give up objective hexes due to VP's gained for the Allies.

Germans are frozen too long. By the time they are able to move the Italians are pretty much wiped out.
