Salerno, September 9th 1943: Historical Campaign Scenario: Operation Avalanche was an Allied attempt to outflank the German positions in southern Italy and quickly gain control of the strategic port of Naples. Coinciding with the announcement of Italy's formal surrender, the operation involved one of the largest amphibious operations to date, and the first use of a combined Anglo-American army. The Allied 5th Army began landing near Salerno, south of Naples, before dawn on September 9th 1943. This game covers those initial landings, through the German counterattacks, until September 16th, at that time the Germans began to plan their withdrawal from the area as Monty's 8th Army started to arrive from the south. This scenario has all of the historical setup and reinforcements. It begins at 0200 September 9th 1943 and ends on September 16th 1943. [Size, large]

This campaign is a little one-sided, it favors the Germans. It is too hard for the allies to capture Salerno and the terrain is not limiting enough. The Luftwaffe is powerful and can bomb the allied ships for good points, so play with limited air recon. But the scenario is entertaining and has a nice size. It contains many beautiful dilemmas and interesting options. I recommend it, although with some minor updates to balance first.

Bad visibility early meant the Axis could operate free of allied air power. It made a big difference.

German air superiority made a great difference. Allied artillery is very effective.

Allies have a much easier time in the weakly held German centre than on the flanks...the western defences in particular are tough given the terrain

The first 60 turns were very evenly matched. Then allied power gradually ground down the axis
