The Battle of the Escaut, 20 May 1940: Though the French 1st Army had held its ground against
heavy German pressure in the Gembloux Gap and the BEF and the Belgian Army had repulsed
lesser efforts to the north, the collapse of the French on the Meuse on May 13th-15th and the
subsequent Panzer thrusts to the west necessitated the withdrawal of the northern armies from their
now precarious forward position. By May 19th, the BEF had taken up positions on the Escaut River
between Oudenaarde and Fort de Maulde, sandwiched between elements of the Belgian Army and
the French 1st Army. The next day the infantry divisions of the German 6. Armee arrived and after
some preparation opened a series of limited attacks. These would soon escalate into a full-scale
assault on British positions. As the battle raged, General Lord Gort addressed his army: "We stand
and fight!" [Size: Medium] Design Note: This scenario is intended to be played with the optional
indirect fire rule.
