The Battle of Monthermé, 13 May 1940: While Guderian's XIX. AK (mot.) led the main effort
against the Meuse defenses at Sedan, Generalleutnant Georg-Hans Reinhardt's XXXXI. AK (mot.)
was to conduct supporting attacks north of Charleville. 6. Panzer-Division would attack at
Monthermé and 8. Panzer-Division at Nouzonville, but, due to traffic congestion, 8. Panzer had
been left behind at the Luxembourg border and 6. Panzer would have to attack alone. The densely
wooded, hilly, rocky terrain near Monthermé, not at all favorable for tanks, was defended by 101e
DIF's 42e demi-brigade de mitrailleurs coloniaux. 42e DBMC, with two machine gun battalions
raised mostly from reservists from the Pyrenees together with a couple hundred Malagasy
tirailleurs, was led by a strong cadre of active duty officers and NCOs and did not suffer from the
same material deficiencies as their neighbors in the 55e DI. Though outnumbered and only
possessing limited artillery support, the machine gunners were ready to resist the invader to the
