165km SW of Smolensk: On July 9th, 1941, units of Panzergruppe 2 are poised to cross the Dnepr River near Mogilev. Intel reports that the Soviets are building a new defensive line along the river. An earlier attempt to take Mogilev on the march failed. The 10th Motorized and 10th Panzer divisions have been ordered to cross the Dnepr by the 10th of July and advance toward Gorki. Elements of the SS Reich Motorized Division will be arriving soon to help. Should Mogilev be bypassed? [2750 sq km - 20 Turns]

The necessity for the Germans to cross the river, combined with the limited number of viable crossing points, does a great deal to offset the German advantage in quality.

After all these years and many changes to mechanics, Smolensk '41 still offers a number of enjoyable scenarios. This is one of them.

The Germans have to decide where to cross the Dnepr and what to do about Mogilev. The Soviets have to decide where they'll try to make a stand, particularly if the Germans cross south of Mogilev.

A classic contest where highest quality has little time and space with which to work. Someone has to get a break or make a mistake to break this one open.

Between evenly skilled opponents this game is very well balanced and a tough game for the Germans to win outright without some "help" from the Soviets.
