140km NW of Smolensk: On the morning of 8th July, Hoth already had advance elements of the 20th Panzer division across the Dvina River. He was ready to advance on Vitebsk, which would unhinge Timoshenko's defensive line. Two more panzer divisons, the 7th and 12th, were to break through in the "land bridge" area between Vitebsk and Orsha. If these attacks succeeded then the panzers would be free to advance on Smolensk in conjunction with Guderian's Panzergruppe 2. What was needed now, was steel nerves and a quick strike to force the Soviet defenses. This is a medium sized scenario that covers the opening of the battle in the area from Vitebsk south to Orsha. Scenario needs to be re-balanced for Smolensk Gold somehow. New disruption movement rules make it very hard to complete an encirclement on the Russians.
The Germans dominate the scenario, though it is balanced so that victory is difficult for them.
The game was enjoyable. On the Soviet side, we feel the undeniable power of the German panzer divisions. It's all about delay to secure victory. Although we were on the verge of a draw, I didn't feel any particular danger of going over. Despite the strength of the German divisions, I think this is a challenge for them.
I think for the Germans to win score wise they must avoid getting bogged down in a fight with the Soviets where they can conduct a fighting withdrawal.
