Austria, June 10th 1985: This scenario covers the possible WARPAC invasion of Austria as a flanking maneuver into southern Germany. While a strike through Austria may look attractive at first glance, the drawback for the WARPAC is that the Soviet units allocated to the invasion are scattered, in various bases almost 500km away, resulting in a long road march just to reach the battlefield. The solution for the WARPAC was to put a unit 'on maneuvers' near the Austrian border. The Austrians for their part coud be expected to make a decent showing until the Danube was breached. After that, the situation would collapse, with WARPAC forces racing across central Austria to reach deep into NATO's Southern flank, while "swatting the flies" that remained in their path. [Size: Medium] Designer note: Although technically 'neutral', Austrian units move & fight under the NATO player's command. Explicit Supply is possible. This scenario has been optimized for HTH play.

This scenario does seem to have some quirks though. For instance some of the austrian infantry near the SW corner of the map seems to be stuck on mountaintop hexes (!) where they can´t move from. I already mentioned the american "helicopter howitzer" (an artillery battalion dropping along w. the american airborne battalion that is both classed as "Helicopter" and "Inderect Fire". Thus it cannot shoot when in Travel mode due to it being a towed indirect firing peice and it can´t fire when out of Travel mode due to it being a Helo!). On top of that there is that austrian unit of elite heliborne infantry that for some reason ISN´T a "Deception" capable unit (which makes their utility questionable, I got some small mileage out of them by using them to spot for artillery, nabbing the odd supply truck and suchlike).

As noted above, it has some dodgy units and unit placement on the austrian side, which detracts from the experience. But otherwise a good little scenario and perfectly winnable from both sides.
JDR Dragoon
A scenario winnable from either side. Toughest as WAPA, but the NATO player has to delay properly in order to draw out time and prevent the WAPA player from getting too many VPs from Objectives and exiting units. Also a very good scenario for using the Explicit Supply optional rule. But still, as noted above, some of the stats of the units are out of whack, which detracts from the scenario and its value.

Still suffers from the same problems I noticed a couple of years ago....

The modified version 850610_11sa_AustriaHTH_Alt from Volcanos MOD has been played.

Great scenario with very close end, decision came in very last turn.

Fun for the Warsaw Pact, but I suspect not so much for the NATO side...

NATO (Austria) must defend all Danube River bridge and ferry crossings against superior Warsaw Pact forces. Austrian defense is challenging given a lack of engineers, limited artillery, no air support, and morale D combat units! The Warsaw Pact will cross the Danube eventually, but if NATO can hold back the enemy until Turns 8 or 9, they have a chance of pulling out a victory. The scenario is balanced and winnable by either side. Swatting Flies in the South is a fast-paced and exciting romp through Austria! A recommended Danube Front '85 scenario. Note - the American airdrop artillery battalion (commented on by another player) functions correctly in this scenario version.
