Soviet clearing attack through Karkov 1943

The once thriving city of Kharkov is shattered. Soviet and German forces are contesting control along a railroad spur southwest of Dzerzhinsky Square. As Operation Star unfolded, 25th GRD entered the battle. By 15 February, the Red Army had forced the Germans into an inner perimeter and threatened German lines of communication running south out of Kharkov. SS-Panzerkorps just vacated the city’s northern suburbs and the Soviet 69th Army filled the void heading into the heart of Kharkov. See the Operational Map in the zip file for the semi-historical location of the rail yard.

I believe this battle favours the Russians.
The SMGs are brutally effective - they are not very accurate, but they suppress like no tomorrow. The key for the Allies in this one is to clear the immediate buildings of Germans methodically, then lay down suppressing fire across the railroad ditch and charge. Hem in the Germans with tons of close range SMG fire and then it is all over.
For the Axis, you will want to setup as far away as possible and get out of initial range of the SMGs, using limited arcs of fire. I wouldn't set up anything on the other side of the tracks but that is just my thoughts.
To balance this one out, I would remove one platoon of Russian SMG infantry. That might just do it.

An excellent battle to demonstrate the short range firepower of Soviet SMGs vs the long range fire of German MGs. I think it would be very well balanced if the German side received about 20% of their total VPs for holding the two objectives on the far side of the tracks vice 100% for inflicting casualties as Soviet terrain VPs are all touch objectives.

a one sided fight really, the germans are outnumbered and seriously outgunned for close quarters fighting. I just got kicked from building to building by sheer firepower. My men could hardly raise their heads yet alone weapons. This would be better single player v AI

Not sure how on earth the Axis player is supposed to win this one, or even make a satisfying showing. Surely no matter what he does or how many casualties he can realistically cause, his troops will be mowed down by the Soviet SMGs just the same. Very unbalanced, in my opinion.

Should have looked at others' views before posting my own. I guess at least two people have solved the puzzle of how to win this one as the Axis! But I'm fairly certain I couldn't have done so.
