War of 1812: Thoughts?
Browsing the WDS catalogue, looking to make the most of the winter discounts, I chanced on War of 1812. I'll probably buy it, but I'd be grateful for any remarks about the scenarios. Particularly, are the scenarios mostly "set-piece" - opposing forces already facing each other and nothing for it but to start shooting - or are there any with room for maneuver before closing to range? I generally prefer some strategic decision-making in moving against the enemy, as opposed to the "inter media res" approach to scenario design where the curtain goes up and the battle is already fixed.

It's likely my favorite of the EAW games. You don't have any truly "large" scenarios, like Brandywine or Monmouth in 1776, but a fair mix of interesting scenarios. Not as many of the OP rifle-militia that festoon 1776 (though, there are some). Native troops are pretty common though. Pretty much pure infantry-arty battles. It's rare for either side to have more than 2-3 cav units total. (Thames being an exception with those insane Kentucky Rifle Cavalry.)

That said, in regards to your question. The starting positions are generally relatively close. (You will usually be in full contact the 2nd turn if one side or the other pushes). New Orleans doesn't start quite as close, but the nature of the battle and the way the map is set up gives you few options as the British. Lundy's Lane and Blandesburg have a bit more room to shape your movements.
