Squad Battles ,which one ?
Hello everybody, this is my first post here :-)

I have a simple question: which JTS squad battle should I purchase ?

Soviet-Afghan War
or
Modern War

My main concern here will be to easily find PBEM opponents.
But of course, the quality of the game is important but it seems to me that all JT titles are great ...

Anyway, which one should I buy ? Or maybe there's another squad title that is a must have before any of these two ?

Thank you in advance for your help !

The Squad Battles series is alot of fun when playing by email.

I don't own either title you are asking about, as I like to play JTS titles from the Vietnam era and older, so I'll let someone who does own those two titles, help you with that.

Best suggestion I can offer you is to select a title that interests you the most, as that will help keep you interested while learning the game system.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask as there are no "stupid" questions especially when you are new to a series.   Smile

Good Luck!   Thumbs Up

Thanks for this answer. In fact I'm quite new at JTS. I used to play a bit of Campaign Series Middle East a few years ago and I really enjoyed it. Last week I decided to explore the JTS web and was impressed by the number of titles. I purchased my first JTS game: Napoleon Waterloo which I truly enjoy. Hence my decision to try more titles, and particularly a squad scale one (always loved squad battles especially in the modern era). Vietnam would be another good choice ... will see how this thread progress before to take my decision:-)

I don't think you will have a problem finding a game for whichever game you choose.I would pick a game  that interest you.

There's an unclear thing for me regarding JTS games. I never see the release date so it's hard to see the release chronological order. My guess is that they are displayed in such order on the web.

For example,is Falklands the latest release,following < Modern Wars < Dien Bien Phu < Soviet-Afghan War < Korean War < etc. ?

I too have always wondered about the exact release dates of each of the JTS titles. Is there a point(s) of reference somewhere on the web in which this information can be gleaned ?

If you scroll down to the bottom of the JTS page and select "News Archive" it will list the date of when each JTS title was released, since 2010

http://johntillersoftware.com/archive.html

If a title was originally released when HPS was the publisher, which covers 99% of the SB titles, then it will not be listed as a new release on the JTS web page.

As far as I know is the order in which the SB titles were released.

Vietnam 08/03/2001
The Proud and the Few 03/01/2002
Tour of Duty 03/01/2002
Eagles Strike 09/06/2002
Korean War 04/04/2003
Advance of the Reich 05/09/2003
Pacific War 09/05/2003
Soviet-Afghan War 06/01/2007
Winter War 04/04/2008

Spanish Civil War 11/07/2008
Dien Bien Phu 06/05/2009
Red Victory ????
Modern War 12/27/2010
Falklands 08/06/2011
First World War 11/16/2012
Grenada (Demo) 02/28/2014

So far so good ! Played a couple of games and really enjoying it. I also like the art (maps, units and sounds).
Good stuff ! Must be real fun in multi.
