I never had the problem of bunching Mike is referring to with the "short hops" method.

I have had divisions stop at some intersections where the AI is confused which way to go when using the "farthest reachable hexes" approach Mike advocates. This is most common in games like F40 which has a dense road network in some areas of the large CG map.

It depends on which of these two issues you see most often in your style of moving.

One tactical note about either method. Best to avoid leaving a lot of units or the head of a column at intersections. A good player will be watching intersections with air recon if that is available to their side. Just makes good military sense.
