RE: What are your favorite units?
Oh yes, the Tiger is definitely an animal Eek

Give a man fire and he'll be warm for a day.
Light a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

RE: What are your favorite units?
Hmmm.... units I like to have in various situations...

Russian: T-34 (early on, when they rule the field; and late war, when sheer mass can be fun as hell, plus superior mobility - particiularly in poor weather and terrain I think the T-34's mobility is underrated in the game). SMG units in urban terrain. Rocket artillery. SU/ISU-152 (bring on the bunkers, and, run little infantry man, run) lol, now that I think about it, I think the best compliment I ever recieved on here was from an opponent who said my T-34s "ran around like packs of murderous wolves" or something to that effect. good for a chuckle.

German: MGs, without a doubt. Just MURDEROUS. Infantry armed with man portable anti-tank weapons. Engineers.

Haven't played as much as the western allies or the japanese, so I can't really speak to them. The eastern front is more my bag. It's where the war was decided.

Units I'd like to see: a what if unit - if Soviet T-60, T-70 production had been redirected to an all-track APC on that chassis. Long LONG ago, I think I forwarded a full description (because it appeared post-war) and photos to Jason, but then we can't have everything we wish for. I'd also like to see Soviet infantry armed with captured panzerfaust/shreck. There were TONS. Not every platoon would have them, but a few you could scatter around.

Utilities I'd like to see: something to make it easier to add your own photos to officers :-)

EDIT: on the topic of Idi Amin Dada - what lunacy. Remember when he had three Ugandan soldiers locked in a truck cab for a week to prove they could make a space flight to the moon? A country on crack.

RE: What are your favorite units?
Being a new guy, any unit that is still moving after some of my questionable moves is a favorite of mine.

RE: What are your favorite units?
I think my favorite unit is the T34...

It was the picture on the original East Front box that caught my eye those many years ago... then to watch it race across the battlefield was just awesome... It still inspires me to watch those T34s race everywhere... I am hooked...

T34/41, T34/43, T34/85... I use the first as my suicide drivers to soak up OPFIRE so the 43's can get in close and tear apart an enemy tank gun line... they also help the Russian infantry tear into the German infantry because those 76's deal out some hurt to the ground pounders...

If the scenario has T34/85's, I'm very happy... finally something that can take on a Panther even if it is in close... requires good scouting and nerves of steel, but they can dent that kitty cloak of invincibility...

As the saying goes, quantity has a quality all its own... It'll hurt during the rush to get close, but I love pitting a battalion of T34s against a company of Panthers...

And infantry... I love engineers... remove blocks... destroy tanks... lay smoke... these specialists are real force multipliers...

Regards,

Jim

I like playing the minor powers. Their units might not be up to par with the major powers they are usually pitted against but I find it interesting to learn about the minor power's OOBs in some forgotten sector of the war.

There's just a huge untapped mine of minor power OOB's that come with the game.

RE: What are your favorite units?
Interesting thread David.

Favorite German units:

Engineers and MG'ers for infantry - very deadly against certain types of targets.

Armored units would be Tiger II's, Panthers, Stuka zu Fuss halftracks (rocket launcher), 234/4 armored cars (75mm AT gun), and pretty much anything "rare." I basically like units that are unusual or have special abilities.

Favorite Russian units:

Infantry would be AAMG's, which rule. I don't like other Russian infantry units.

Armor would be t-34/85's are always a favorite, IS-2m's are all-time favorites, Katyusha rocket launcher trucks.

American fav's are Pershing tanks and 76mm Shermans. I also like the chaffee light tanks and M7 priests.

For the British, I like the Fireflies (who doesn't?), those huge, smoke firing, infantry killing tanks (that I can't remember the name of), and those DUKW carriers (they're ampibious - and armored to boot), and the 25pdr AT guns.

Least favorite units are the usual wagons and bicycles.

The list of units (and changes to existing units) I'd like to see added is a long one...which I submitted to Jason over the summer in several articles. He implied that many of them could be added to the game, but not all. A few of them are the Flakpanzer I, the Schwimmwagen in an infantry carrier role (max strength about 3), officers in shwimmwagens (amphibious officers), armored engineering vehicles (like the Bergepanther for the germans - can remove wrecks among other things), ALL soft-skinned vehicles having their defense raised to "2" to bring them in line with trucks, and many others.
Thus, what is of supreme importance in war is to attack the enemy's strategy.

RE: What are your favorite units?
One of the units I would like to see is a motorized leader be able to get out of his staff car.

It is frustrating to have an infantry leader (motorized) not be able to go with his infantry into rubble, swamp, etc.

Also would love to see units (mountain, ranger, etc) that can scale cliffs (maybe utilizing a percent chance to go up the cliff).

Thanx!

Hawk

Amen!

Visited the Armour Museum the other day with my kids. Some of the guys mentioned here were there... Sending their regards to everyone! cheers

Crossroads Wrote:German: Stug IIIs ;) and mk IVs

Took a second or two to recognize this guy, in his post-war dark green paint job, for what it was: a PzKpfw IV J. A fragile looking chassis... But you'd not want to look at the long PaK/40 from the wrong side of the gun sights I am sure.

Here's an early model StuG III Ausf. G in its war-era camouflage matching nicely the late autumn colours of firs, pine trees and sky:

These guys managed to get an astonishing 10-to-1 kill ratio against T34-85s in the forestry bocage that was and is the Carelian Isthmus. Punched in a few IS-2s and ISU152s foor a good measure as well.

Here's a late model Ausf. G, restored to its original German dunkelgelb:
