RE: Air power.........
Good points guys.........

There's an excellent book that gives a good account of an interdiction mission by HS129 and Fw190's during the Kursk battle.

The title is Hs 129 Panzerjaeger, by Martin Pegg.

There is an excellent account of an interdiction mission and how it was performed in great detail.

The thumbnail version........

Hs 129 'flight' on patrol on the flanks of the II SS Pz Kp.

Soviet ground units, infantry and armor in 'brigade strength'.

German air units alerted, SG1 (Fw190's) and the Hs 129 outfits. There were some 68 Hs 129's and about the same number of FW 190.

A 'relay' attack method is used, one squadron over the target attacking, one returning to base, on leaving the base to attack and one at the base being refueled and rearmed!

This 'battle went on for about four hours.

The Russian units never managed to pull of their 'surprise' attack on the flank of the II SS PzKp. Heavy losses were inflicted on them by the air units alone.

Oh, and by the way the 'battle' was co-ordinated by a 'flying CP' in a specially equipped Ju 52, and radar units on the ground!

This took place just out of sight of the II SS PzKp units, about 2 to 4 km from their positions.

Anyway the book goes into detail as to procedures and actual combat as related to the Hs 129. Its a very good source of information and if you can get a copy, it will be worth it.

Dennis :)
