is it possible to split squads into smaller units ?

Absolutely. Most squads have teams you can split. You can also split off a scout team (two soldiers) or the AT team (usually two as well). Frequently if you perform one of the small team splits you cannot split the reminding group up. Although there are a handful of three team squads that will allow that.
