How do I get started here

How do I get started here
I've played SPWaW 8.4 allot.

How do I convert to the format used here?

I found all the files for Steel Panthers in the Downloads section, tried to "mod" my SPWaW 8.4 but found some inconsistences. For example the map files are named pzmap.###

Do I need a different version of SPWaW then run SPWAW_H2H_fr_short.exe overtop?

Feel free to direct me to any documentation or threads that might be appropriate.

Thanks for you help.

Secondly I have been sent speml000.dat and speml000.cmt and haven't seen these file types before. Where might they go?

If I am not mistaken they are for WinSPWW2 or WinSPMBT, not SPwaw.

Spemls are for spww2 and spmbt, they are completely different games. Free download versions can be found for them too.

H2H is easiest to install on waw ver 7.1 but can be installed on any later version, you just need to replace one file .... forgot the name but it's in the download section too.

No, that's the waw 8.4 you already have. Try shrapnel games.

No bro.

OK, here is some brief history.

SSI created Steel Panthers. They did 3 releases.

When they closed down they sold / or gave their code to two different crews.
Matrix and SPCAMO.
All the WAW versions are from matrix.

The game being played in the ET tourney (and AP and probably more games in general on the ladder) is made by SPCAMO.
It is called winSPww2 or the modern war version (1945-2020) is called winSPMBT. generally they are WW2 and MBT.

Though both crews made games from the initial SP code...they used different versions of the code and then really developed the games in their own way.
There are many similarities (or so I am told, I only play CAMO versions) but also many differences. The game files are not compatible at all, nor map file etc.

You can DL for free both MBT and WW2 to try them out.

Go here for the free DL of MBT

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Worksh..._page.html

and here for ww2

http://www.shrapnelgames.com/Camo_Worksh..._page.html

and here for the Forums.

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/

Shrapnel is a gaming site that hosts the SPCAMO games.
You can also buy CD versions of both games that have a few enhancements.

The current version of the games are
MBT v4.5 and ww2 v3.5

Follow the instructions for installing the base game, and then the upgrades in order.
Sweet as.

It'll take you a while to get to grips with all the nuances.
The mechanics of the games are quite different to the WAW version so I am told.
There is a good bunch on the forums...many questions will have been answered there.
Also...there is a game guide in both games.
Read it...seriously...read it. it's long, but you will find out everything you need to know there.

There are players on this ladder who will be willing to help you out with a mentor game or two (basically asking questions as you go rather than getting the crap whipped out of you and calling that a 'lesson')...I for one will be happy to help.

The CAMO games are very good IMO (both matrix and CAMO games have their strengths and weaknesses....many here will have opinions on what they are...I am try to be neutral here) and if you have the time, you will enjoy learning them.

Feel free to fire away more questions.
I am in Aussi, so will be up for a while yet.
I am a Kiwi though Big Grin

Welcome to the ladder cuz
It's good to have another Kiwi on board.

RE: How do I get started here
Hi there. Those files I sent you are for SPWW2, version 3.5. That's the game used in the European Twilight tournament you signed up for ;)

Looks like I am good to go.

Thank you Walrus and others. Walrus you should repost your "History" and have it stickied somewhere. Was looking for something like this and it could aid others.

RE: How do I get started here
Hi Dalinski
Good idea bro, it would need to be fleshed out a bit.
If weasel's keen...I'll get around to it.

To be fair, most geezers that make it far enough to find the Blitz are fairly aware of the versions.
Still, if it helps someone in the future...it's worth the sticky I guess :-)

Hope you are getting to grips with the CAMO versions.
You'll be noticing a few different things...no reserves, the smoke clears away, no stupid op-fire system, better maps...and I am sure a few things that seem worse.

I never bothered with WAW versions...just cannot see the point when i have enough games for the time I have free just with ww2 and MBT.

Let me know if you need a mentor game or any help.
Cheers
Walrus
