OOPS, missed your query at bottom of your post
:(
here is step by step process
Some basic info....
Steel Panthers Enhanced uses the SPWAW 8.403 Mech.exe
The latest "official" version of Steel Panthers:
To install Enhanced, You do not need to upgrade all they way to 8.403 if not desired, the mod will install fine with v8.3 and then it will self upgrade because as mentioned, Enhanced uses the 8.403 SPWAW Mech.exe.
STEEL PANTHERS - ENHANCED 2009
Over the years, many so-called "mods" have been released by numerous players. The function of these mods is to modify (duh!) some aspects of the game. These changes can vary from simple text (name) editing to detailed order of battle (OOB) changes. The motive behind all is to "Enhance" the game, make it even better, more fun, more realistic etc.
A couple years ago, a number of great minds working along side the lead programmer for SPWAW, took the effort to design and release "the mother of all mods" called "SP ENHANCED". It applies a huge number of changes and modifications (far too many to even mention here), and addresses many code issues, which had become skewed or misunderstood by OOB teams over the years, and it pushes the whole game on an entirely new level, incorporating something from all the different versions of "Steel Panthers" over they years making it much, much better in many aspects. The Mod uses the SPWAW 8.403 mech.exe. So, this mod is treated as a must-have, and it is generally accepted that the latest and greatest version is titled "Steel Panthers Enhanced 2009"
Of course, some of the early Campaigns and Scenarios that were designed for a non-enhanced version of SPWaW may not work well with the mod. On the other hand, nearly all of the original campaigns and many scenarios have already been modified, created, and/or patched-up to enhanced standards, AS WELL AS THE DESERT FOX MEGA CAMPAIGN. They can be found at the Enhanced forum. Plus many many new Scenarios and a couple campaigns have been created with SP Enhanced in the last few years. For the others, you may need to use a non-enhanced version. We'll also see that installing and uninstalling the mod is really easy, so there shouldn't be a problem at all.
So how does one install the mod? The process is fairly simple, but I'll guide you through the steps. To start with, let's download the required files, SP ENHANCED 2009 Mod File (around80megs)
Place it inside your SPWAW/Mods folder (inside spwaw main folder)
Don't unzip it! Well, you can if you want to, but there is no need - mods usually come as SPM files (Steel Panthers Mod), but, they can be installed as zips as well.
We're almost there! To install the mod, we will use a special utility called the "ModSwap". This powerful tool allows us to install the mod while creating "back-ups" of the original files. So later, if we choose so, we can always uninstall the mod, and everything will be back to normal. So switching between SPWaW v8.3-8.403 and SP ENHANCED is quite easy!
Open up the ModSwap (you'll find it among the other SPWaW applications under the Start menu). Select "File/Install..." Browse to the folder where you have the mod. If you don't see the mod immediately, change the "Files of type" to "SPM" or "ZIP", whichever type the particular mod happens to be, inthis case SP ENH 2009 is an SPM File. Now you should see it. Simply click on the mod, and hit "Open". In the screen that follows, select "OK".
This is it! You have successfully installed the mod!
To uninstall open modswap again, highlight the installed mod and then choose 'file/uninstall', and your game reverts back to its original form.
