I remember my grandfather's brother, PFC Nick Vrcan who was killed in action March 11, 1944 during the fighting in and around Bougainville. His is buried in the Manilla American Cemetary in the Philippines.

My uncle, a good friend of his, and a man I never met, received the Silver Star for his actions in the same campaign on hill 700.
