RE: Pius XII: The Hound Of Hitler, by Gerard Noel
I read a book not too long ago entitled "The Battle for Rome", and all of the major players are covered in it with back ground information. One of those players covered is Pius XII and the Vatican. It touches on some of what the above article talks about, and further more, stipulates that his reasons for wanting desperately to negotiate a treaty with Germany was two fold. One, that Pius X could have done more to prevent WWI; and two, the over arching belief that the Soviet Union and Communism were the bigger threat than Nazi Germany. Remember to view those beliefs through the lens of 1939 not 1945 or 2008. A fools dream perhaps, but as late as 1944 there were many on the Allied side, some in fairly high position, who entertained a negotiated settlement with Germany with an eye towards turning them against the Soviet Union as well.
