Battle of Alsfeld 1985

RE: Battle of Alsfeld 1985
Soviet parachutes blossomed across the clear sky. Oberstleutnant Wambach, commanding the Bundeswehr reserve battalion south of the American Task Force did not wait for orders, he initiated a counterattack at once. Fallschirmjaegers were most vulnerable right after their jump - gegenangriff at once, with everything!

Red Air returns in force, but NATO AA defences are ready now..., few get away undamaged...

Cpt Vokloi was in shock. What intelligence said there was nothing was actually more than a company of US armor and infantry with at least a company of German mech infantry also. Hearing reports from different units he realized that nothing was going right. Some small successes but not enough! Command had messed up yet again! Telling his units to go to cover he looked around just to see a Hind in the distance get blotted to the ground. The vaunted air power he was supposed to get was mostly blotted to the ground.

Cpt Nimod waited for his scouts to report in.

"Los! Los! Los!"

A number of confused and bloody firefights erupt as Wambach's Jaegers tangle with the Soviet VDV troopers. Knowing the paratroopers must not be given any respite, the Jaegers press their attacks ruthlessly. The Soviets put up very stubborn resistance. There are no prisoners...

Suddenly a worried voice, out of breath, transmits across the US brigade net:
"Sunray is down...!"

Sgt Golstoy was amazed that his AA unit was so far untouched. The fact that his airdrop did not kill him and his crew was one thing, surviving this long afterwards was another! Staring out of the tree line he could see a Nato arty piece with its loader. Shouting orders the 35aa gun roared to life exploding the carrier with 3 bursts and the SPA the next burst. This was sort of fun! A HE shell lobbed from another artillery piece made him come back to reality.

Meanwhile Capt Nimod was hearing reports all over the net.

It was like hearing 50 people trying to speak all at the same time.

"Wolf 1 - scratch 1 Leopard. " was his own Hind group reporting.

"Tiger 1 - AA unit dead" was a tank from north company blotting out something.

" I'm hit! I'm hit! Pulling back to rear" He wasnt sure who that was.

Scout units start to report in again. Redleg 1, Redleg 1 came across the net radio. Already the artillery was shooting out.

Some of the units were linking up with the paras even as he gave the order for the next phase.

Large pillars of smoke were rising form the forward battle area.

Monitoring the radio transmissions between his engaged tankers Nelson gritted his teeth at yet more bad news.

"Oscar, Xray - five Tango approaching battle position three Alpha-Romeo-Fox four five. Main gun rounds ineffective, they just keep comin'! Over!"

"Xray, calm down, son..., over."

"We've hit the sucker three times - nuthin'! They ain't stopping for hell! We're changing position, out!"

Cpt Sergei Rumkov was furious! The Soviet ATGM was supposed to be as effective as the NATO Tow but performance so far had proven otherwise. Perfectly good locked in launches netted nothing! His rockets were being more effective and taking out a ROland launcher appeased him somewhat. Those things were just pure murder! Turning back to reload he made some mental notes.

Finally units were actually in eyeshot of linking units. Now if only those Cobras could be blotted out of the sky! Soon! Very soon.

Cpt Nimod in his T72 command tank was just closing his canteen when the command net blared to life " Red Moon Red Moon" I say again "Red Moon Red Moon". Now the advance would become faster and harder against the Nato units.

Soviet armor were crashing forward in the north and in the south they were coming on strong against the Germans. Drastic meassures would be required to turn them back..., the situation did not look good..., but would the troop morale hold?

Then, a small glimmer of hope..., three Soviet fighter-bombers come screaming in from the east and all are shot down by SAM and AA fire..., viewing the planes go down Nelson grinned, maybe there was still a chance...
