Danube 85
I would like to mod the modern campaigns to make the soviet/afghan war from the eighties and the civil war following the withdrawal of soviet forces in 89.

a few questions:
1. Can I mod the afghan and mujaheddin forces.
2. edit the map to create parts of Afghanistan.

I love the soviet /afghan war in squad battles. I want to see an operational level game for this era.

thanks for your time.

I don't think there is a main-stream company which has attempted to design a wargame/computer game simulating a guerilla war.

I'd love to see it done, but I suspect it is beyond the ability of game designers to do it.

This isn't a rag, just an observation.

RE: Danube 85
what about the Squad battles title: soviet/afghan war.

I know in that title, as the muj's. All i needed to do is kill or disrupt the soviet forces. there was no way the afghans can hold their VL's but to stay alive to give the soviets a run for their money. One or two kills for the muj's is usually a victory in the game.

I would disagree. When we were stuck with old paper wargames, and PC wargaming was not even a dream, it was impossible, or virtually so. Mostly having to do with the map and the units always being visible. Some board games tried it, Vietnam jumps to mind, but it was complicated and still unsatisfying.

But, with computers, and hidden movement, its not only possible, but cries out for an attempt. I doubt Tiller will have a go, as his PzC engine is not set up for it...but let's hope someone will take a serious stab at it.

And, Iran v Iraq still needs to be made! :)

To answer the first question, there is no map editor for the HPS Operational games of PzC or MC. HPS does supply editor for everything else, so to add a map editor would put them out of business, so to speak.

I tend to agree with Hiroo on this one. The Soviet Afghan war was fought with small units. Hit and run missions for the Afghans would seem the correct strategy. A conventional fight would have the Afghans seriously out gunned and destroyed in a few turns.

The squad battles title seems the best way for HPS to approach this conflict.
