Do not forget that a dug in position also gives the attacker protection if he ejects the defender, and this can disrupt a counterattack.

However, in general the system favors the attacker so the defender needs all the extra help he can get. This is less true when using the Alt scenarios, but still...IMHO one should always dig in unless you need to rest or reaccumulate troops. :)
