K'Talan mod - a few observations - John Given - 10-15-2012

Hey warhorse - I'm really enjoying your K'talan mod - it's refreshingly difficult and puts a whole new spin on the CS. Kinda reminds me of the movie "V"

I also like how all the scenarios are bundled into the main download file - just dl and play!

I wanted to point out a few things though that might make it a little better (here I go again, nit-picking). Big Grin

In 2d mode, the K'talan units have that dark cammo on them (the icon itself) that makes it really hard to see what type of vehicle (or anything really), that the unit is. If the cammo for the 2d icons were lightened, they should be easily readable. The 3d icons look excellent though - no change needed there. Awesome

When pressing F2, I notice that units do not have a point value listed - is that intentional? Imagine my surprise when I lost 2 K'talan carriers for THIRTY POINTS each! It's just kinda hard to plan attacks when you can't gauge risk properly (because you don't know the value of your own units). Or is it listed somewhere but I'm just not seeing it? Dont Know

I do like the little picture icon that replaces the terrain description in the F2 window - it's a little hard to make out the tiny pictures, but it is new and kinda modern-looking. :looks good:

Anyway, still learning the game and enjoying it. Thanks for all your work on this! Thumbs Up

Hi John,

I'm real glad you are enjoying it! I'm actually redoing the scenario's, Ashcloud and myself are running through them in chronological order, good stuff!! Do you play against another player at all? That makes it REAL interesting, as you have noticed, the K'talan is very powerful, but also very expensive. This is to reflect the high value, and low chance at replacing the lost units, as what they brung is all they got!

I don't mind critique at all, this is how things are refined and made better, so thanks for that as well!!

The camo was experimental, I thought it would be something to set them apart, originally they were just grey, but too similar to the Italian grey, so tried the camo, I can do something about that!

When you press F2, look down under the bridges, it is laid out the same as the regular F2, just with it's own flair!

The values are as follows;
Victory Points per Strength Point
Full Strength Points
Maximum Range
Maximum Range vs. Armor/Hard attack
Maximum Range vs. Soft target

Hope that helps?!

If you have any interest at all, we are doing a team game with this mod, feel free to jump in, just let me know. Also, you do know there are two playable Campaign Games with it too, right?

Remember also when getting ready to play a game in the desert, use the provided JSGME to switch out the icons, so the K'talan desert camo is used!

Just yell if you need anything, and thanks for playing my game, I had a lot of fun making it!!

Thanks for the reply as always, warhorse!

No games with other folks yet, I'm "in training," heh.

I playing around with your korean war mod as well - when I have a few games under my belt I'll speak up on that too.

TT you soon! Smile

RE: K'Talan mod - a few observations - Warhorse - 10-16-2012

You're welcome!

Ahh, no problem, the K'talan are a learning curve for sure. First instinct is that you can barge ahead and crush everything in their path, but not so!!

Thanks for trying the Korean War as well!

RE: K'Talan mod - a few observations - John Given - 01-22-2013

Hi Warhorse, a few more observations to add.

I've played a few scenarios now, and am currently going through a dynamic campaign game.

Because humanity seems to be allied against the K'talan threat, shouldn't the main desktop .exe look like the K'talan standard, as opposed to the old Talonsoft West Front .exe? It would be really cool to have that.

Do the K'talan have any 'special abilities' of any kind (like the way the Japanese have banzai charge)? there was nothing in the readme.

I was going to add that the K'talan seem to have too high a point value for their units, but I notice that when I play as humans, I get my butt kicked that way too - I think I'm going to just have to move slowly with this and take time to learn it.

However, it's easy to imagine K'talan with lower point values as a balancing factor, because random 'disabled' results from light artillery, or hits from blind shelling can cost you the GAME - as opposed to being a mere nuisance for other nations (and remember, when playing the computer, the program uses the full-strength artillery when blind-shelling, and that can get VERY annoying).

Love the new sound effects - thinking about putting a few of them to use for my EF and WF games. Love the new unit skins too - you sure have been putting a lot of work into this!

P.S. As a reminder, I have to actually click on a k'talan unit to identify it when in 2d mode - the cammo color is just too dark to allow me to distinguish the unit silhouette.

love the mod - needs more scenarios though! Big Grin

RE: K'Talan mod - a few observations - Warhorse - 01-22-2013

Hey John,

Thanks for your input!! I like the idea of the exe symbol, and will also try to remedy the 2D issue!! The points are high to reflect losses really hurting them, I realize the AI pounds with arty, but keeping moving and higher VH's help alleviate that!

Would like to get more scenario's out, but haven't had any time lately, unfortunately, and there seems to be next to no interest in the mod...

RE: K'Talan mod - a few observations - Warhorse - 02-16-2014

Hey John, been awhile, but you will be happy to know I addressed the 2D icon camo dilemma, and the WF exe icon! Also, the game will be updated to use the new CS formatting, as soon as the new patch is released. I changed the 2d counters to red, since no-one else uses that color, and the little pictures and the symbols look good on them as well. Also made the icon for the exe that of the K'talan standard.
