Recon Units and Scouting - Hawk Kriegsman - 01-04-2010

Hello All,

Armored cars are ok. Scout jeeps are nearly useless and scout tanks are also ok. There job in CS is too scout, but the CS engine currently usually means recon by death.

I have been thinking.

Could units be designated as recon units?

If so could they have a scout option that they could exceute during their turn in the form of a drop down (like destroying a bridge or the like)?

They would need to expend AP's to do this of course.

If this task is successful could enemy units in LOS be exposed (they do on your turn when they fire)?

To Jason and the Matrix people: Could it be done?

To the CS populace: What do you think?

Me: I would love the ability to scout during a turn at my choosing.

Thanx!

Hawk

I always thought that the recently added ability of guns to hide could be carried over to other units as well. There should be a scout/recon class of AFVs and troops that has extra movement, extra vision, and extra hiding ability. If they op-fire or fire, they reveal themselves.
Or we already have this and I'm an idiot.

To the best of my knowledge it only applies to guns 57mm and under and ATR platoons.

We partially have this. We have the recon class. It has some of the abilities you have mentioned. But this only takes place at the start of your turn.

The only way you can spot the enemy during your turn is to bump into it or it fires on you.

I would like to be able to spend AP to "look" around and spot things during the turn.

No you are not an idiot.

Thanx!

Hawk,

I too am in favor of expending AP's to perform a recon check. As you say most of the time the recon we do is "recon by death". Would also be even nice if recon units could move into enemy LOS (in a hex with concealment capability) and have a chance to stay hidden by perhaps expending extra AP's to move into the hex. I mean that's what recon does right? sneak up and look around without letting the other guy know you're there?

I proposed that exact same idea a couple years ago. Some liked it, some didn't.

Yes, it could be done, and something I would like to see implemented.

It is would have to be option, I presume?

In the meantime, there are commando type units that have a "hidden movement" code. One may wish to experiment to see how it works for recon.

Panzer Campaigns, another John Tiller design, has recon spotting as an optional rule. So it could be done. Not sure how hard it would be to code.

The use of recon units is a difficult tactic to master. Most people "bump" hexes to find hidden units.......this can be very costly! An opponent that is sneaky with his op-fire settings can chew up recon units in a hurry.

The introduction of snipers shows that small units are a viable option for the CS game engine. Perhaps a scout unit would be just the thing we need.

I'm sure all nationalities involved in WWII used scouts to recon ahead of an attack.

How did I miss that one?

I agree with you that it should be implemented.

Yes to keep as many people happy as possible make it optional.

Let's make this happen.

Thanx!

I believe there is already a patrol / scout unit in the game. I know I had them in one of Curt Cabbage's EF scenarios. Check through the OOB.

Thanx!

Hawk, I've always thought that the guys driving the scout jeep must be the most unintellagent people who ever walked into a war. I believe they would be classed as 4F for draft purposes. Lets see that big Tiger tank is going to fire at us, lets stay in the jeep for protection. I think we need to look at expanding the scout class somehow just not sure how it could be done. I really don't like the idea of another option in the game, maybe as said before used from the drop down menu to be used or not during the game.

RE: Recon Units and Scouting - Von Earlmann - 01-04-2010

Talked with a WWII vet years ago that was in recon......he said their job was to go like hell and find a way around the enemy...Hawk is right something like that might be nice.
