If you get hacked, what then? - Montana Grizz - 09-09-2009

If someone hacks into your email account, do you sort of share it with them? I mean, can you send emails or do they just take it over?

My email is with my area phone service provider. I would call their tech division (24/7) and tell them of my problem. I would imagine they could immediately shut down my email account and provide me with a new one?

If one is using a free email provider I don't know if one can get service as quickly?

Well, here's a few tips for Yahoo accounts..

* Email account:--> [email protected], in the subject line, put your old password.

* Call 866-562-7219, press 2, press 2. Be ready to provide Date Of Birth, date account was hacked, some details about the last emails you accessed, and the answer to your secret question.

* Repeatedly email customer service at [email protected]

* Call 1-(408) 349-1572, tell them you're a premium member (even if you're not), they will transfer you to password department.

..no idea if they actually work. :whis:

One of my programmers actually gave me a "hacking" lesson one slow day at work. I won't tell you how he did it, but it was disturbingly easy. Bottom line, it isn't usually an insecure server, it's the user account's lack of a strong password. He hacked into an email account at one of the main free providers. Had he wanted, he could have then used that same account and the now known password to log into this person's other accounts; banking, social networking, etc. He immediately logged off. It's illegal, even if you don't do a thing.

Bottom line: make sure you use a strong password. 8 characters with a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Jim Smith would be an idiot to use jims, for instance. Better would be MniJS62!. To remember that password is: My name is Jim Smith and I was born in 1962!.

Once you're hacked, the hacker can either change your password and the account is his or he can continue to monitor everything you do, including new sites you sign up with. So be really careful.
