I thought you were talking in your post about defending with companies as being better than defending with battalions...in that you can spread out. Alls Im saying is that companies in defense will accumulate fatigue at x3 the rate they would in battalion and that can hamper a defnese in a long game

The value of recon and sending out scouts has been a time proven valid military tactic. The PzC games reward their use.
I would point out that your unit in travel mode may have sufficient MP to escape back up the road they came down in the same turn thus only incurring defensive fire.
It just depends how far you are willing to push them knowing the terrain and the cost in MP (and possible losses of men, vehicles and fatigue / disruption) you are willing to pay to gain the intelligence from your reconnaissance.

The game mechanics work very well IMHO to allow you to take a risk or play it safe depending on your style. Both ways can work well. You have the option to decide.
